Diet
pyramids may be used to express the proportion of meat, dairy
Products, fruits, vegetables and staple carbohydrate foods in
a given diet. The Mediterranean diet pyramid is based upon the
“traditional” Mediterranean diet, where consumption
of olives and olive oil, play an important dietary role. Scientific
research indicates that consumption of the Mediterranean diet
is associated with a low prevalence of nutritionally linked chronic
diseases and high life expectancy.
The Mediterranean
diet is compatible with excellent health and is a tested, proven,
cultural model for healthy eating.
In contrast,
the US Department of Agriculture food pyramid was constructed
against a poor national diet known to contribute to high rates
of heart disease, cancer and other nutritionally linked chronic
diseases.
